What i think this quote means is that Dean Smith wasnt trying leave a legacy he just kept doing what he thought was the right thing.  He wrote letters to his players even after they had left somewhere else he wasnt doing that just so people could think hes nice he did it because for him it like the right to do. He wouldnt stress out if they won or lost he just cared if they played. He never took credit for the win he would say its the players who did all the work
