What i think this quote means is just to be true about everything and anything. Like Abraham Lincoln was when he was alive he walked six miles just to return change that is impressive! because not a lot of people would do that just to give someone change the person would just keep it. Abraham Lincoln could not feel with the guilt so he would just do the right thing and tell the truth because its easier.
